TAV Istanbul Atatürk Airport is hosting a diabetes awareness initiative realised by students of Maltepe University and Anadolu University.
"We Are by Your Side" is a social responsibility project started with the voluntary participation of Maltepe University Faculty of Communication students and strengthened by the support of the students of Anadolu University Faculty of Communication Sciences.
The exhibition aims to raise diabetes awareness which has become one of the prior health problems of Turkey. Visited by more than 150,000 passengers every day, Istanbul Ataturk is an ideal venue to promote awareness in Turkish society.
Turkey's leading NGOs Turkish Diabetes Foundation, Turkish Diabetes Association, The Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism of Turkey, The Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes of Turkey, Association of Diabetes Nursing, Diabetes Dietetic Association, and Lilly Pharmaceutical also support the project.
Data of the Turkey Diabetic Epidemiology Study II shows that the rate of diabetes in the adult population of Turkey increased to 13.7 per cent from 7.2 per cent at the end of 90s. The research also revealed that 7 million people are affected by diabetes but only 4.3 million people diagnosed.
Diabetes Awareness Research published by Turkish Diabetes Foundation in November 2013 shows that 63 per cent of the population in Turkey is unaware of diabetes. Research data shows 65 per cent of the population has wrong information about the factors causing diabetes.
According to International Diabetes Federation's 2013 data, 382 million people have diabetes in the world. It is estimated that the number would reach to 592 million within 20 years.
“We are glad to support the increase of social awareness for diabetes by showcasing ‘We Are by Your Side’ exhibition to the passengers,” TAV Istanbul General Manager Kemal Ünlü said.
The "We Are by Your Side" exhibition is located at Istanbul Atatürk Airport International Terminal Departures Floor and runs until December 18 2014.
